Does your creative juices feel like they’re taking a suicide dive? Never ever going to come back? You’re not the only one I promise! This happens to everyone, and I certainly am not excluded. If the ideas are leaving the station we will need to wrangle them back in. Let’s slip out of the stress trap and back into creativity’s arms.

Ready? We can do this. We can do hard things…

Start by eliminating stress

If you are stressed then you are not going to have great ideas. The pressure you create kills your spark, kills your creativity, and kills the possibilities that are available to you.

If you find that you can’t get into the flow of your own creative process, then take some actions to create more relaxation.

  • Get some sleep
  • Stop trying to do everything yourself and get some help!
  • Say no to doing things
  • Release the judgments about where you should be and what you should be doing
  • Ask your body what it requires – movement, food, physical touch?
  • Breathe

Give yourself the permission to create the space you require to relax. The ideas will come when you are relaxed enough to receive them.

March into the doors of Creativity’s office and make some noise

Time to invite yourself back into the world of Creativity. No one is going to open that door for you (ideas are not yanking the door off to let you in). They know you are welcome, you know you’re welcome, so march on in!

There is no meet and greet service at the door, the ideas are not just hanging around waiting for you. Be loud, be forthright, and claim your space. The ideas are seeking a partner to create them, so make some noise to let them know you are here!

Don’t wait for inspiration to hit, do the work

Start creating some momentum by taking any kind of action:

  • If you’re a writer, copy someone else’s words.
  • And if you’re a speaker, have a conversation with someone or read something out loud.
  • If you’re a photographer, take some terrible photos.
  • Make something shitty

Get into the motions without caring about perfection. Practice is making an absolute mess, so get stuck in and get messy!

Your creativity being on the ledge doesn’t have to be scary. Reduce the stress, know it will come back, and try your best (I know it’s hard) to relax. The land of creativity is a wild one and an adventure every single time. Welcome yourself back into it, take a deep breath, and know that you got this.
